Social and Ethical Issues

Lecture Summary
1
Today's lecture is about protecting you and your PC.
We are vulnerable dies to the webs open protocols, no quality control, universal access, and the educated or uneducated people that use the web. There are problems with copyright, plagiarism, security, privacy.
copyright:copying material that is not allowed, reproducing it etc.
Plagiarism:stealing of other peoples work.
security:content,password theft,viruses, SPAM,spy ware.
Privacy: People watching what you are viewing on the Internet.
There are ways in which can aid us in protecting ourselves from these issues like antivirus, deleting cookies, scan attachments, don't open something you don't know, as well as various software's which can help you remove and scan for these issues.

Tutorial Summary
2
During today's tutorial we viewed sources on copyright and Internet security, as well as picking which information sheets we think are relevant to me as an undergraduate.

a. Review 5 information sheets from the Australian copyright council website (www.copyright.org.au) and record your findings.
1 copyright basics
This information sheet covers copyrights purpose, what does it protect, how you can get copyright protection on your material, inserting a copyright notice for example "the notice is: © (or "Copyright") + copyright owner’s name + year of first publication —for example: © Gus O’Donnell 1968"("copyright basics" , n.d.)

2 Registering copyright.
This article says that any work can be copyrighted and that it doesn't need to be published, again this article like the previous discusses the copyright notice, sometimes if there is a dispute in who owns the piece of work they need to resolve the problem in court, copyright protects Australian copyrighted work in most other countries and vice versa, in some countries you have to register copyright through the government which gives you more leverage in court if copyright has be infringed.

3 Designs for functional articles
This articles covers what copyright protects designs like for chair tables, ornaments, decorations etc. This copyright protects the owner from other people replicating that design or mass production, for an commerical design (2D) like cars etc, registered designs from a company or individuals models, paintings, sculptures, and photographs as well as many other designs that this article goes into in specific detail.

4.Films & copyright
On the subject of film there are many specific copyrights within it like soundtrack, screenplay, visual images etc, when filming yourself you usually need legal advise on what you can and cannot use and permissions you must ask for.Thing that are protected under copyright are sound recordings, computer programs, artistic works like photos, pictures and craft also written material such as articles, poems, lyrics etc, it then goes into the major and specific detail on what and how you are covered.

5. Games & copyright
This source outlines that there is no specific copyright for the game as a whole, names and ideas cannot be copyrighted, artwork is protected by copyright.
Copyright protect element of the game such as sound recordings, artistic works, musical works, literacy works (written text, symbols, computer programs) but in general what you can observe(hear, view, or sense) can be copyrighted.

In conclusion anything thing you can observe is covered by copyright but things you cant like ideas and names within something like a game or a film is not covered by copyright.

b. Using the APRA website (http://www.apra.com.au/music-users/online_mobile/online_mobile.asp), explain what you need to know about music and the web.
The article covers that in our modern day society we are becoming more digital and people are finding it easier and easier to copy, reproduce and steal things this is evident with the Internet and music, people AR digitally reproducing CD by ripping or downloading and copying them and making them available on the Internet, this is infringing two breaches in copyright, reproducing the music files and communicating files to the public, this mean that the hard working artist looses out.People breech copyright everyday by either broadcasting without permission, reproducing and downloading.

c. Write a plan to protect yourself from attacks on your privacy and security. This plan should cover the threats of viruses, Trojans and how you can protect your own personal information. Use the following sites for reference:
http://netsecurity.about.com/
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/virus6.htm
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2100282,00.asp

The Internet can be a dangerous place and things are going downhill with the mass amount of users and content, people making lives difficult by creating problems for the rest of us, but there are some things we can do to minimize the risk of infection.

In protecting yourself from viruses, you should install a good anti-virus program and Internet security program, don't accept any unknown files, never accept files which end in EXE, COM or VBS and change your security level in Internet option to high.

Trojans are a hard type to get rid of as they constantly reproduce and change their file names and destinations, ways in which we can protect ourselves is not to download programs from unknown sources, scan all files before you open them this includes disks and USB Drives and scan your computer regularly, as always use a firewall, Internet security programs and anti virus software.

In protecting your personal information you should turn your Internet setting to high, clearing your cookies regularly , use Internet security software, don't click on unknown emails "scams" never give out personal information to anyone or pop ups that ask, when online banking ensure that the domain is correct because you can be giving your details to a fake page, and change your passwords regularly.

Reading Summary

3. Reading 1 Summary: ‘EFF's Top 12 Ways to Protect Your Online Privacy’
This article discusses 12 ways to protect your online privacy.
The article discusses not to reveal personal information like by turning up Internet security in the options tab in Internet explorer, turn on cookie notice so you know when your computer is storing information you input on the web, keeping a clean email address one which you don't use for chatting online etc, never send out personal information on the Internet to 'friends', do not send private emails information or files on shared or work computers because you never know who is watching or monitoring, don't reply to spammers,be careful of sites which claim you won something or tell you to input personal details,be aware of web security,be aware of you network security(wireless Internet), be aware of privacy policies,be careful what you do and type on the Internet it can be monitored and stolen, use encryption to protect yourself.

4. Reading 2 Summary: ‘Ethics in Computing - Social Justice Issues: Electronic Monitoring’
This article goes over monitoring and privacy issues, because now in our modern day society everything is monitored, what you may say in a chat room, emails you send, what you post on a message board, virtually anything that you do online can be motored with the right tools and authority this site covers types of monitoring, like monitoring emails and files in a workplace, surveillance on workers, monitoring what websites they go on, but generally in companies people get fired based upon the authorities breaching the employees privacy by monitoring what they do, but is it legal? people are getting fired for blogging as well as numerous related issues.

5. Reading 3 Summary: ‘Brown & Michaels - Overview of Intellectual Property’
This article goes over protecting intellectual property via patenting, copyright and trademarks.
This idea of patenting enable inventors to protect there ideas from people who steal ideas, copy them, and produce them making a large profit at the cost of the inventor.
Copyright covers a persons work being the observable like pictures, sounds and texts and stops people from stealing these works and benefiting from it.
Trademarks can be the packaging of the product, colours of a product and the logo and company name for example Cadbury tm have to colour purple for chocolate and Coca-Cola® have there name and text of the title, but in general the products appearance and names cannot be copied without breaching the act.

Data, information and Knowledge

Lecture Summary

Today’s lecture consisted of first going over topics in previous lectures as well as covering the topics of data, information and knowledge.

Definitions:
Datum: a fact or proposition
Information: A collection of facts or data which relate to each other
Knowledge: The sum or range of what has been perceived, discovered of learned

Characteristics:
The characteristics of information; summative, relational, dimensional, permanent, has meaning, uncertain value.
The characteristics of Knowledge; inferential, experimental, judgmental, subjective, very valuable.

Importance:
The importance of data: Collection of valid and unbiased data is essential however it must be quantitive then qualitive and be representative. E.g. sampled data; price and shares, measured data; weather, statistics.

The importance of information: It must inform and it must be relational and must be meaningful.eg historic; tables of census data. Records, budgets.

The importance of knowledge: Although it is subjective knowledge’s origins should be clear, and should have a logical conclusion as well as justifying from data and information.eg; white pages, marketing strategies.

Relationships:
Relationship of data as the base block of the 3 characteristics, data is composed of individual propositions of facts although it doesn’t have value on its own, it needs to be supported by the other 2 characteristics.

Information is built on data where trends are confirmed from facts to model in order to create.
Knowledge builds from data and information and is the human part of data and information and our experiences and wisdom help us to understand the other characteristics of data and knowledge.

Facts:
Data: Data is unrefined and has no importance on its own as it just is and needs other factors in order to understand it.

Information: information is the connection between data and our understanding or processing of it into something we can use.

Knowledge: Knowledge is the storage of information in a form that is accessible and usable.

Understanding: The process of using, updating and storage of knowledge.

Tutorial Summary

Building knowledge
In today’s tutorial we went to the webpage http://www.success.co.il/is/dik.html and were asked to look for the meanings of data, information and knowledge in other resources to find similar meaning to those defined in the above website.
So I will use www.dictionary.com , www.thefreedictionary.com and www.dictionary.cambridge.org

Task 1:
From this research compile your own definition for terms data, information, knowledge and wisdom .

Data: Is raw, factual information and can be displayed as statistics and has no meaning on its own.

Information: Alternatively can be described as knowledge being transferred consisting of data we can be processed or understood.

Knowledge: Described as understanding or the processing of information gain through experience or learning.

Wisdom: Having good judgment, or having the knowledge of what is true.

Task 2: Use the lecture slides and a search of web for alternative ways to represent these terms. Use the drawing toolbar in MS Word to create a graphical representation of these terms.
The visual representation of these terms.

Task 3: Outline briefly how understanding the relationship between data, information and knowledge can assist your university study.

These 3 issue are important in university life because they are the processes of learning the essential part of university life because data is the raw material which needs to be processed into information so it is usable and can be understood, then we learn this information and process it into our minds so that it becomes knowledge and is stored into our brain and can be recalled and applied.

Task 4: Make a list of at least 5 organisations that collect information from their clients or the public. Can you think of a reason why they might collect this information?

Census: shows information and statistics on where we live and is like household to household comparisons, peoples jobs ect. These details are used to compare the nation, and can be used for governmental use and private use.

Bureau of statistics: obtain information on various areas which can be graphically or statistically represented and can be used as research or as evidence.

Water Corporation: collect data on water usage, this can help with monitoring water use in our time of drought and help the company conserve water.

Synergy: collect data on power consumption, this may help in ways in which they can manage the production of power as well as ways in which they can make things more efficient.

Television: collect data on what people watch on television, what shows are most watched, this is important for TV networks as it shows them what people like to watch and that maximize rating by utilizing this information.

Reading 1 summary
http://www.systems-thinking.org/dikw/dikw.htm
This reading goes over the topics of data, information, knowledge, understanding and wisdom and that they are not the same but flow through into one another until it is a product that we can use and how it links and is related. This system of thinking is a process and all parts are important to the overall product.

Reading 2 summary
http://camellia.shc.edu/literacy/index.html
The data wisdom lesson covers the topic of knowledge and that it is continuance to develop and build on but it takes years to down pack this process to something effective and efficient. This reading explains that it is a chain where one idea links onto another and we are continually learning throughout our live developing and building on our previous knowledge.

28.04.08 week 10

Lecture summary
1
Today’s lecture covered the topic information management, major problems face with information is that it’s hard to find quick and effective ways of managing it without it building up too quickly, ways in which can help us manage information is a computer, it can make it easier to organise information through folders, documents, images, bookmarks, and filing.

Information formats:

Atom based: In the forms of books, reports and papers they have negatives and positives, positives are that is physical, it’s difficult to change and copy. Negatives are that there expensive, take up a lot of space, hard to edit and distribute.

Bit based: Observed in the digital format like digital copies of atom based formats. Positives of bit based information are that it’s easily accessible, cheap, and easy to edit, easy to reproduce or copy. Negatives of bit based information are that it’s easy to copy or steal, hard to define its authenticity.

Organising:
You can find information on your computer through search or organising files into folders or directories, you can find information on the internet via catalogues and search engines.

Tutorial Summary
2
In today’s tutorial we did a tutorial on how to bookmark or favourite websites we may want to save on the internet and read and do activities on ‘being digital’ article.

a. Do you think that Negroponte’s ideas are still relevant? Why?

Yes I do think his ideas are relevant he’s saying that in our modern society nothing has value atom based information looses value rapidly however bit based doesn’t have much value to start with. His ideas also state that bits are very inexpensive, easily accessed or obtained , also he says bit and atom over cross over or interchange like books are both atom and digital firstly then write the book physical they process it digitally then they print it physically also publishing it digitally in forms such as eBooks .Negroponte ideas suggest that things are going more to the digital side in our society because its ultimately more easier for everyone and cheaper with less or no waste products, these digital copies are hard to damage and are everlasting. In conclusion I believe that Negropontes ideas are relevant as these ideas are currently happening, we are becoming more comfortable with but based information as it save us time and money making our lives easier but less connected.

b.
Atoms
Pros: It is right in front of you and you have a physical connection to it, you can easily transport it and use it, you always know where it is, it’s hard to edit or copy.
Cons: It takes up physical space, costs money, easily damaged, harder to produce and distribute.

Bits
Pros: Flexible, easy to get/transfer, easy to distribute, cheap to manufacture, endless lifespan, easily updated.
Cons: Easily stolen/copied, valueless, hard to determine its authenticity.

Communications

Lecture Summary
1
In todays lecture we covered the topic of communication.
Communication has developed from something physical to now something digital,Information and comunication technology (ICT)
Communications can be between individuals, individuals and companys, within a business these communications can take part in wheel networks, chain networks and all-channel networks.
4 types of communication are synchronous ie physical engagment, asynchronius individually through letters, place dependant where all parties meet at the same place and independent parties can be anywhere online, email, messenger etc.

ICT forms: video confrencing through messenger and the use of a web cam and microphone, through mobile phones, as well as emailing.

Examples in practice of ITC are; online messenger, online networking, message boards, blogs, chat rooms, podcasts and email.

There are many positive for using ITC It just depends if it right for you and what you are doing accoring to tasks and personal preference.

Tutorial Summary
2
During today tutorial we were aasked to look at sites like google and search in groups and see what we found also, investigate the material in this community. We were then asked to look at podcasts and to answer questions on todays work.

a.
i entered the term biology it then took me to a page where i could select within a region, topic, language ,activity or members i clicked science and technolgy in topics and went to sci.physics.

b.
In this group i discovered posts on various scientific things like physics and Einstein as well as many other scientific terms.

c.
Benifits of podcast on university students are that its something new age for us new age students it opens a new portal to learning and information in a way comfortable to us wich we can perform anywhere through the use of a computer, mobile phone or mp3 player.

Readings
4
The first reading is composed of two parts and discusses 'Essential Email Etiquette' and 'Email Do's and Don'ts'
In the first reading "Essential Email Etiquette" It discussed the formality of composing and sending emails and that you must use a subject appropriate to your email, address the recipient properly like by using there full names, spelling their names correctly for example (Dear Ms. Apple), select a tone which is appropriate for the email, like if it is a formal one like to a business you would use proper language and no abbrevations and correct spelling, not like you would in message to yours friends like (hi!, watsup, brb, u, r..etc), edit your email incase you made typos, didnt explain something right, or used incorrect wording. The use of attachments, if you are sending them let the recipient know becuae they might mark it as spam.
The second part 'Email Do's and Don'ts' discusses what and what you should now do in composing an email. The articles says when your a sender that you should first judge whether email is the appropriate meathod of communication, get straight to the point so you hold the recipients attention, make sure you convey what your suppose to, like dont miss the point of the email, explain when you need the response and who should respond,be sure to explain things, dont assume they know what you know, dont forget to check spelling and grammar for typos, stick to a topic when writing an email dont go blabbering on about something else and remeber to be patient when your waiting for a reply.

5

Reading two cover the topic of spam spam is known as the constant unwanted emails that you recieve in your inbox, alot of it may be advertising as well as alot of other things.SPAM can be annoying for large businesses and corporations becaue they must filter through SPAM to find legitimate emails.Emails are free this enables SPAMMERS to send as many emails as they want, it destroys the value of email, it wastes time, you cant get rid of it.Generally this reading discusses all the implications of SPAM and that its an infinate problem which is extremly hard or even impossible to be free from.

Evaluation & Authentication

Lecture Summary
1

Todays lecture covered evalutation and authetication, and discusses that anyone can publish material on the web, there is no control on what can and cannot be published, nobody checks quality. The lecture also defines information quality as information which is fit for use and fit for use is defines as information is apropriate for use in the way your using it, although its IQ relative. The lecture also discusses the context of the web with its open architecture and protocols which enable information to be completly accessable everywhere with an internet connection, unfiltered, no enforced classification of material and no quality control system.
In 1997 a criteria was created to aid in evaluating the web like accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and coverage (Beck) and Harris' ideas credibility, accuracy, reasonablness and support.Kirks ideas in 1996 were authorship, publishing body, bias, refreencing sources, currency and variablilty, these are the framework used to help us determine whether a webpage is fit for use.
Some tips for overlooking webpages is it an individuals website,if the address has %,~, or users or members in it,domain name is it a .com,.org,.au,.gov etc, does the name of the site mach up to the sites address.
Looking at the page:is there information about who wrote it,do they have a page about the sites purpose or company, wat it updated recently, does it have working links, does it have refrences from where they got their information, does the website forfill its purpose.

Tutorial Summary

http://www.ithaca.edu./library/training/think.html
This sources give 6 dot points to follow; considering the source, look at the details, know what is happening,if your not sure dont use it,make sure your in the right place, distiguish websites from other websites on the net.
also this found on the webpage

Authority: Who are the authors of the Web page, or who is responsible for it? What gives them their authority or expertise to write?
Accuracy: Do you have good reason to believe that the information on the site is accurate? Are the facts documented?
Objectivity: What is the author's point of view? What is the purpose of the site?
Currency: When was the information on the page originally written? Has the site been kept up-to-date?
Coverage: Does this site address the topic you are researching? Is the information basic and cursory or detailed and scholarly? However complex the language might be, is the information substantial?
Value: Was the page worth visiting? Does the site offer anything informative, unique, or insightful? Is the site free of careless errors, misspelled words, and poor grammar?

http://www.taftcollege.edu/newTC/Academic/INCO48/sec6-4.htm
This site goes into more detail then the previous one they use the 10 c's for evaluating the web these are Conten,t Credibility, Critical Thinking, Copyright, Citation, Continuity, Censorship, Connectivity, Comparability and Context. This site also use what, who when and why being what is the publishing body is it a .com, .gov, .net etc. Who is the author?,Why is the page here and when was it last updated.

a
3
http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.html
This site uses Becks evaluation model authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency and coverage so it's nothing new unlike the other 2 sources.

In conclusion these two pages tell us the provide us with the same general fundamentals about evaluating the web, however one goes into more detail then the other, but if a site is not authetic you wouldnt need all these fundametals to determine its worth. The third page just uses Beck's evaluation model so its the basics where as the other two sites cover these ideas however, they also create a more advanced spectrum within Becks main ideas.

b.
http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think60.html.

When you evaluate the two sites, please address the questions after each point:

Make sure you are in the right place : Is this site a good source for the information you need? Was the page worth visiting?

When in doubt, doubt: Do you have good reason to believe that the information on the site is accurate? Are the facts documented?

Consider the source: Who are the authors and who is responsible for the site?

What is their expertise? What is their bias?

Know what's happening: What is the site's purpose or point of view?

Distinguish Web pages from pages found on the Web: Was this page designed for the Web, or is it something else, such as a government document or a journal article?

website 1 A
http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/decade60.html

This webpage was what i was looking for, it performed the tasks that it should have, and yes it was worth visiting.
I think that the webpage is authentic as it has refernces to books and films.
This page has an author and an email address, the website suggest that she is a member of the "Lonestar Library" although i cannot varify this.
The site appears to be unbiased in it documentation on America's Cultural History.
Yes i think it is designed for the web although it appears flexible and information could be documented in books or journal articles.

website 2 D
http://www.lib.virginia.edu/small/exhibits/sixties/index.html

This webpage is what im looking for although it may not have th inforamtion that i specifically need.
I believe the information to be true becaues of the authors qualification as well as it being a universities website.
In considering the source the author is Associate Director for Special CollectionsAlderman Library, University of Virginia which makes me believe the source.
The sites puerpose is to inform people on the litrature from the 60's.
This information is designmed for the web it has lots of hyperlinks between pages reveiws and information about the books this includes images.

During todays tutorial we were asked to do monash university's interactive tutorial on direcoties and search engines and to do an online quiz.

a.
4 stratagies that will help structure a good search are
1. Create a search strategy, and decide before hand what your looking for.
2. Use boolean terms like And, So and or to aid your search.
3. Use keywords phrases when searching
4. Search based on concepts.

b.
Stratagies that Iused to find answers are using key words and boolean, using inverted commas as well as knowing what information specifically i am looking for.Using these factors narrows my search criteria giving me information that is specific to my research as well as information i can use.

c.
In conclusion this weeks topic helps me search for information more specifically and teches me that there is information out there but it all depends in what ways we type in our search to what inforamation we recieve.

Lecture Summary
1
Today's lecture was on using online libraries and databases, the lecture covered the positives on online librarys; its convenient, broad spectrum of information, its up to date, easy to transfer and copy, available all the time.negatives of online libraries are that it is hidden, available on by subscription or membership, meathod of finiding information may be difficult.
Although online libaries are very useful they do have limitations are that its only available online, cost money, reduced quality of images and original works, not updated reguraly.
There are issues copyright and proper refernecing when using online libraries.
On the topic of online databases the lecure descibes it as being more organised then online libaries as they are filed into faculties although it is harder to obtain information, their are many types of online databases some are; people searches, news and media, maps and atlases etc.
Some advantages are that its more organised, current, broad, accessable all the time, available online.Disadvantages are that they cost money, hard to navigate, alot of information to search through.
onlines databases provide information to the public in a highly accessable way making it easy for anyone with a computer and a internet connection to access with ease although quite a few are subscription only.
