Lecture summary
1
Today’s lecture covered the topic information management, major problems face with information is that it’s hard to find quick and effective ways of managing it without it building up too quickly, ways in which can help us manage information is a computer, it can make it easier to organise information through folders, documents, images, bookmarks, and filing.
Information formats:
Atom based: In the forms of books, reports and papers they have negatives and positives, positives are that is physical, it’s difficult to change and copy. Negatives are that there expensive, take up a lot of space, hard to edit and distribute.
Bit based: Observed in the digital format like digital copies of atom based formats. Positives of bit based information are that it’s easily accessible, cheap, and easy to edit, easy to reproduce or copy. Negatives of bit based information are that it’s easy to copy or steal, hard to define its authenticity.
Organising:
You can find information on your computer through search or organising files into folders or directories, you can find information on the internet via catalogues and search engines.

a. Do you think that Negroponte’s ideas are still relevant? Why?
Yes I do think his ideas are relevant he’s saying that in our modern society nothing has value atom based information looses value rapidly however bit based doesn’t have much value to start with. His ideas also state that bits are very inexpensive, easily accessed or obtained , also he says bit and atom over cross over or interchange like books are both atom and digital firstly then write the book physical they process it digitally then they print it physically also publishing it digitally in forms such as eBooks .Negroponte ideas suggest that things are going more to the digital side in our society because its ultimately more easier for everyone and cheaper with less or no waste products, these digital copies are hard to damage and are everlasting. In conclusion I believe that Negropontes ideas are relevant as these ideas are currently happening, we are becoming more comfortable with but based information as it save us time and money making our lives easier but less connected.
b.
Atoms
Pros: It is right in front of you and you have a physical connection to it, you can easily transport it and use it, you always know where it is, it’s hard to edit or copy.
Cons: It takes up physical space, costs money, easily damaged, harder to produce and distribute.
Bits
Pros: Flexible, easy to get/transfer, easy to distribute, cheap to manufacture, endless lifespan, easily updated.
Cons: Easily stolen/copied, valueless, hard to determine its authenticity.

Reading summary
4 The reading ‘grazing the net’ was a reading describing online schooling and the positives of it that it would be cheaper and more easily available, they seem to think of it as “free range learning” letting us choose and learn in our own ways and pace using the internet as a resource as well as learning to navigate through it. It is said that online schooling shows positive benefits enhancing reading and communication skills, as well as initialising a revolution of freedom and innovation.
