Lecture Summary

Todays lecture covered evalutation and authetication, and discusses that anyone can publish material on the web, there is no control on what can and cannot be published, nobody checks quality.The lecture also defines information quality as information which is fit for use and fit for use is defines as information is apropriate for use in the way your using it, although its IQ relative.The lecture also discusses the context of the web with its open architecture and protocols which enable information to be completly accessable everywhere with an internet connection,unfiltered, no enforced classification of material and no quality control system.
In 1997 a criteria was created to aid in evaluating the web like accuracy, authority,objectivity,currency and coverage (Beck) and Harris' ideas credibility, accuracy,reasonablness and support.Kirks ideas in 1996 were authorship,publishing body, bias,refreencing sources,currency and variablilty, these are the framework used to help us determine whether a webpage is fit for use.
Some tips for overlooking webpages is it an individuals website,if the address has %,~, or users or members in it,domain name is it a .com,.org,.au,.gov etc, does the name of the site mach up to the sites address.
Looking at the page:is there information about who wrote it,do they have a page about the sites purpose or company,wat it updated recently,does it have working links,does it have refrences from where they got their information,does the website forfill its purpose.

This sources give 6 dot points to follow; considering the source,look at the details,know what is happening,if your not sure dont use it,make sure your in the right place,distiguish websites from other websites on the net.

Accuracy: Do you have good reason to believe that the information on the site is accurate? Are the facts documented?
Objectivity: What is the author's point of view? What is the purpose of the site?
Currency: When was the information on the page originally written? Has the site been kept up-to-date?
Coverage: Does this site address the topic you are researching? Is the information basic and cursory or detailed and scholarly? However complex the language might be, is the information substantial?
Value: Was the page worth visiting? Does the site offer anything informative, unique, or insightful? Is the site free of careless errors, misspelled words, and poor grammar?

This site goes into more detail then the previous one they use the 10 c's for evaluating the web these are Conten,t Credibility, Critical Thinking, Copyright, Citation, Continuity, Censorship, Connectivity, Comparability and Context.This site also use what,who when and why being what is the publishing body is it a .com, .gov, .net etc. Who is the author?,Why is the page here and when was it last updated.

This site uses Becks evaluation model authority,accuracy,objectivity,currency and coverage so it's nothing new unlike the other 2 sources.
In conclusion these two pages tell us the provide us with the same general fundamentals about evaluating the web, however one goes into more detail then the other, but if a site is not authetic you wouldnt need all these fundametals to determine its worth.The third page just uses Beck's evaluation model so its the basics where as the other two sites cover these ideas however, they also create a more advanced spectrum within Becks main ideas.

This webpage was what i was looking for, it performed the tasks that it should have,and yes it was worth visiting.
I think that the webpage is authentic as it has refernces to books and films.
This page has an author and an email address, the website suggest that she is a member of the "Lonestar Library" although i cannot varify this.
The site appears to be unbiased in it documentation on America's Cultural History.
Yes i think it is designed for the web although it appears flexible and information could be documented in books or journal articles.

This webpage is what im looking for although it may not have th inforamtion that i specifically need.
I believe the information to be true becaues of the authors qualification as well as it being a universities website.
In considering the source the author is Associate Director for Special CollectionsAlderman Library, University of Virginia which makes me believe the source.
The sites puerpose is to inform people on the litrature from the 60's.
This information is designmed for the web it has lots of hyperlinks between pages reveiws and information about the books this includes images.
