Using online libraries and databases
Lecture Summary

Today's lecture was on using online libraries and databases,the lecture covered the positives on online librarys; its convenient, broad spectrum of information,its up to date, easy to transfer and copy, available all the time.negatives of online libraries are that it is hidden, available on by subscription or membership,meathod of finiding information may be difficult.
Although online libaries are very useful they do have limitations are that its only available online,cost money,reduced quality of images and original works,not updated reguraly.
There are issues copyright and proper refernecing when using online libraries.
On the topic of online databases the lecure descibes it as being more organised then online libaries as they are filed into faculties although it is harder to obtain information,their are many types of online databases some are; people searches, news and media,maps and atlases etc.
Some advantages are that its more organised, current, broad, accessable all the time,available online.Disadvantages are that they cost money, hard to navigate, alot of information to search through.
onlines databases provide information to the public in a highly accessable way making it easy for anyone with a computer and a internet connection to access with ease although quite a few are subscription only.

During today's tutorial we went on the ecu libary site to access online databases and in that database to search for a specific item.In today's tutorial we also looked at specific sites and answer given questions.
a. 10 useful tip/functions from the ECU Library site
Catalogue: This is where you can search for materials like books and cd's.
Database:This is where you can find journal articles.
Website database: websites organised by topics and chosen by the librarians as good sources.
Quick catalouge search: quick and easy way to find catalouges you specifically want.
Ebook library:where you can search and find online books.
Academic tip sheets: tip sheets on various outcomes accessed and important to the university.
Simo:enrolment program also shows course and study timetables information.
ECU refrencing guide: The refrecning guide used by the university availble as a digital copy.
Multimedia resorces: Where you can find images,videos and sound clips.
Resources for students: Where information about the libary and services available to students is shown.
b. Who do you think might use a service such as MEDline plus website and what do you think they might get from it?
I think that anyone who is interested in medicine and health would use this site as it provides detailed infomation with the use of diagrams to describe and explain the subjects.From this site you could get diagnosis help, information on specific ilnesses or problems or satify your curiousity.

Todays reading 'Finding what you want on the web' is an article on th BBC news website and it discusses the ways in which we search for infomation as a part of our research, it covers the search engines we use such as google and yahoo and how we pefer using it because its easy and quick to loacate information however filtering through the result to find what you want and good quality is harder to do in comparison to databases which also cost money to view.

The second reading 'bare bones lesson 7: basic search tips'this site covers search fundamentals and displays tips on how to make you searchs more effient for example if you wanted to search dogs but not cats +dogs -cats, use quotation marks if your search for that exact phrase,as well as proper use of joining words like and or, or etc.
