Data, information and Knowledge

Lecture Summary

Today’s lecture consisted of first going over topics in previous lectures as well as covering the topics of data, information and knowledge.

Definitions:
Datum: a fact or proposition
Information: A collection of facts or data which relate to each other
Knowledge: The sum or range of what has been perceived, discovered of learned

Characteristics:
The characteristics of information; summative, relational, dimensional, permanent, has meaning, uncertain value.
The characteristics of Knowledge; inferential, experimental, judgmental, subjective, very valuable.

Importance:
The importance of data: Collection of valid and unbiased data is essential however it must be quantitive then qualitive and be representative. E.g. sampled data; price and shares, measured data; weather, statistics.

The importance of information: It must inform and it must be relational and must be meaningful.eg historic; tables of census data. Records, budgets.

The importance of knowledge: Although it is subjective knowledge’s origins should be clear, and should have a logical conclusion as well as justifying from data and information.eg; white pages, marketing strategies.

Relationships:
Relationship of data as the base block of the 3 characteristics, data is composed of individual propositions of facts although it doesn’t have value on its own, it needs to be supported by the other 2 characteristics.

Information is built on data where trends are confirmed from facts to model in order to create.
Knowledge builds from data and information and is the human part of data and information and our experiences and wisdom help us to understand the other characteristics of data and knowledge.

Facts:
Data: Data is unrefined and has no importance on its own as it just is and needs other factors in order to understand it.

Information: information is the connection between data and our understanding or processing of it into something we can use.

Knowledge: Knowledge is the storage of information in a form that is accessible and usable.

Understanding: The process of using, updating and storage of knowledge.

Building knowledge
In today’s tutorial we went to the webpage http://www.success.co.il/is/dik.html and were asked to look for the meanings of data, information and knowledge in other resources to find similar meaning to those defined in the above website.
So I will use www.dictionary.com , www.thefreedictionary.com and www.dictionary.cambridge.org

Task 1:
From this research compile your own definition for terms data, information, knowledge and wisdom .

Data: Is raw, factual information and can be displayed as statistics and has no meaning on its own.

Information: Alternatively can be described as knowledge being transferred consisting of data we can be processed or understood.

Knowledge: Described as understanding or the processing of information gain through experience or learning.

Wisdom: Having good judgment, or having the knowledge of what is true.

Task 2: Use the lecture slides and a search of web for alternative ways to represent these terms. Use the drawing toolbar in MS Word to create a graphical representation of these terms.

Task 3: Outline briefly how understanding the relationship between data, information and knowledge can assist your university study.

These 3 issue are important in university life because they are the processes of learning the essential part of university life because data is the raw material which needs to be processed into information so it is usable and can be understood, then we learn this information and process it into our minds so that it becomes knowledge and is stored into our brain and can be recalled and applied.

Task 4: Make a list of at least 5 organisations that collect information from their clients or the public. Can you think of a reason why they might collect this information?

Census: shows information and statistics on where we live and is like household to household comparisons, peoples jobs ect. These details are used to compare the nation, and can be used for governmental use and private use.

Bureau of statistics: obtain information on various areas which can be graphically or statistically represented and can be used as research or as evidence.

Water Corporation: collect data on water usage, this can help with monitoring water use in our time of drought and help the company conserve water.

Synergy: collect data on power consumption, this may help in ways in which they can manage the production of power as well as ways in which they can make things more efficient.

Television: collect data on what people watch on television, what shows are most watched, this is important for TV networks as it shows them what people like to watch and that maximize rating by utilizing this information.

This reading goes over the topics of data, information, knowledge, understanding and wisdom and that they are not the same but flow through into one another until it is a product that we can use and how it links and is related. This system of thinking is a process and all parts are important to the overall product.

Reading 2 summary

The data wisdom lesson covers the topic of knowledge and that it is continuance to develop and build on but it takes years to down pack this process to something effective and efficient. This reading explains that it is a chain where one idea links onto another and we are continually learning throughout our live developing and building on our previous knowledge.
